SUMMARY:Ocean Swim\, Sunday\, May 22nd at HB Tower 9 (City Beach) at 7:30 am
DESCRIPTION:You’re invited to our ocean swim: meet at (Huntington Beach City) Tower 9 off PCH & Huntington Street at 7:30am. In the water by 7:40am. Usually done by 8:15\, depending on length of swim. \n \nBad news: water most recently was ~56 F. Dress warmly.\nGood news:  waves 2-3 feet\, SUNNY skies\, low wind. We’ll probably see a lineup of surfers. \nIf you’re new: You can bring fins. Well\, you can bring fins regardless. They’ll give you the propulsion and confidence to swim through the waves.\nWe can escort you through the waves if you need help. \nRecently\, we’ve been swimming ~1\,500 yards. If there are enough swimmers\, we can break into 2 groups\, with one swimming ~1\,500 yards and the other 2\,000-2\,500 yards. \nWater might feel a little cold to the uninitiated. So\, pack a hot beverage to drink immediately upon exiting the water (not your car). This is more important than drying off. But\, definitely dry off once you’ve taken in some hot fluids.  \nWe look forward to seeing you there! \nTower Swim parallel to shore rather than a Buoy Swim. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Tower 9 Swim\, Saturday\, April 9th at 8 am. Big wave day!
DESCRIPTION:You’re invited to our ocean swim. We meet at (City) Tower 9 off PCH & Huntington Street. In the water by 8:15. \n \n  \nConditions look good if you can handle waves: waves will be 5-6 ft; medium wind (MagicSeaWeed exaggerates their wind forecast). Sunny skies\, and  water at or above 60 F!\nIf you’re not accustomed to swimming through 5-6 ft waves\, bring fins or hand paddles. Or duck dive like a pro! \nWe can escort you through the waves if you need help. \nRecently\, we’ve been swimming ~1\,500 yards. If there are enough swimmers\, we can break into 2 groups with one swimming ~1\,500 yards and the other 2\,000-2\,500 yards. \nWater might feel a little cool to the uninitiated. So\, pack a hot beverage to drink immediately upon exiting the water (not your car). This is more important than drying off. But\, definitely dry off once you’ve taken in some hot fluids. \nWe look forward to seeing you there! \nTower Swim rather than a Buoy Swim.

A double is ~1\,700 yards. Will explain at Tower 9. \n  \n \nWaves will be 1-2 ft\, according to MagicSeaWeed. Wind will be 4-5 mph. Water & air temp will be cool\, so be prepared! \nThe waves and wind will ideal for beginners. Even triathletes!\nIf you’re unaccustomed to the cold\, bring a hot beverage in a thermos to Tower 9 (not your car). You’ll want to sip it about 2-4 minutes after exiting the water to offset the afterdrop.\nAll levels welcome. Most of us average 1:35-2:20/100m. If you’re a little slower\, don’t worry; we’re a nonjudgmental group. If you’re faster\, that’s awesome. \nYou can bring your fins\, especially if you’re a wee bit nervous about the waves and/or ocean swimming. Fins will give you the power to make it through any chop and likely increase your speed over your entire swim. Fins are the best speed advantage for metabolic cost available. Hand paddles help\, too\, but you’ll feel the increased workload.\nP.S. Water temp has been 56-60 F recently. Air temp\, sun\, winds\, and humidity can also make you feel warmer/colder. You can check Surfline (check Huntington Street; it gives you a live camera on Tower 9\, but with ads interspersed every 30 seconds) and MagicSeaweed (check Huntington Pier as it’s the nearest location for MSW) for a recent forecast. Be warned\, though\, that Surfline can have a delay of a day and MSW tends to overestimate the water temp & windspeed by quite a bit.

SUMMARY:HB Tower 9 Swim\, Sunday\, February 20th\, at 8am
DESCRIPTION:Conditions look great\, at least according to MagicSeaWeed: \n \nIf you’re a beginner\, Sunday would be a great day for a swim. 2 to 3′ waves with negligible wind is ideal. \nWater has been ~59 F. The sun\, if it’s shining as predicted\, will boost your morale. \nBut\, be sure to bring a hot beverage to Tower 9. SUMMARY:JOSH's Farewell Swim\, Tower 9\, 8 am\, Friday\, Feb 18th
DESCRIPTION:We will be saying goodbye to Josh. He joined us in August\, 2021 and has been a regular swimmer ever since. Unfortunately\, he’s returning to Ohio to be with family. Their gain is our loss. \nSo\, in honor of Josh\, he’s going to choose the distance and direction of the swim. My guess is it’ll be a buoy swim\, ~1000 yards\, and maybe a little extra. \nThe conditions below\, from MagicSeaWeed\, show an excellent day for newbies: \n \nWaves will be 2-3′\, winds will be light. It’s going to be a great sendoff for Josh. \nWater has been a little on the cool side\, about 57-59 F. \nOh\, and in honor of Josh\, some of us will ditch our wetsuits for the swim. Josh has been wearing only a speedo\, goggles\, and a swim cap for the whole winter. \nMay we all aspire to be more like Josh!

SUMMARY:HB Tower 9 Swim\, Sunday\, Feb 6\, 8am.
DESCRIPTION:We will have a short\, 500 yard option\, along with our usual buoy (or multiple buoy) swim. Meet at 8:00\, in the water by 8:10. Usually out of the water by 8:50. \n \nWaves will be 1-2 ft\, according to MagicSeaWeed. Wind will be 4-5 mph. Water & air temp will be cool\, so be prepared! At least waves are low\, wind is low\, and wind is in a good direction (offshore). Should be sunny\, which actually makes a huge difference! \nIf you’re unaccustomed to the cold\, bring a hot beverage in a thermos to Tower 9 (not your car). \nOh\, and you can bring your fins\, especially if you’re a wee bit nervous about the waves and/or ocean swimming. Fins will give you the power to make it through any chop and likely increase your speed over your entire swim. \nP.S. Water temp has been 54-60 F recently.

SUMMARY:HB Tower 9 Swim\, Thursday\, January 20th\, 8am.
DESCRIPTION:Group will decide on length and course of swim. Meet at 8:00\, in the water by 8:10. Usually out of the water by 8:50. Typically\, we’ve been swimming 1\,000-2\,000 yards\, depending on number of swimmers and water conditions. \nBasically\, if the sky is sunnier & waves are low(ish)\, we’ll do a buoy swim or two. Each buoy swim is ~1\,000 yards. Most of us complete a buoy swim in 16-22 minutes. \nIf waves are higher and conditions more difficult\, we swim parallel to shore\, doing Tower swims. Basically\, swim either north or south\, parallel to the beach\, to a set # of lifeguard towers. First\, though\, we swim beyond the breakers and the surf lineup. That way\, we’re close enough to the shore (normally\, within 150 yards)\, so that we can bail easily\, if need be. \nWaves will be 1-2 ft\, according to MagicSeaWeed. Wind will be 4-5 mph. Water & air temp will be cool\, so be prepared! \nIf you’re unaccustomed to the cold\, bring a hot beverage in a thermos to Tower 9 (not your car).
