SUMMARY:HB Tower 9 Swim\, Sunday\, February 20th\, at 8am
DESCRIPTION:Conditions look great\, at least according to MagicSeaWeed: \n \nIf you’re a beginner\, Sunday would be a great day for a swim. 2 to 3′ waves with negligible wind is ideal. \nWater has been ~59 F. The sun\, if it’s shining as predicted\, will boost your morale. \nBut\, be sure to bring a hot beverage to Tower 9. You’ll want to sip it immediately upon exiting the water so as to offset the after drop. Mild hypothermia has its advantages\, but isn’t as fun as people have been saying.

SUMMARY:JOSH's Farewell Swim\, Tower 9\, 8 am\, Friday\, Feb 18th
DESCRIPTION:We will be saying goodbye to Josh. He joined us in August\, 2021 and has been a regular swimmer ever since. Unfortunately\, he’s returning to Ohio to be with family. Their gain is our loss. \nSo\, in honor of Josh\, he’s going to choose the distance and direction of the swim. My guess is it’ll be a buoy swim\, ~1000 yards\, and maybe a little extra. \nThe conditions below\, from MagicSeaWeed\, show an excellent day for newbies: \n \nWaves will be 2-3′\, winds will be light. It’s going to be a great sendoff for Josh. \nWater has been a little on the cool side\, about 57-59 F. \nOh\, and in honor of Josh\, some of us will ditch our wetsuits for the swim. Josh has been wearing only a speedo\, goggles\, and a swim cap for the whole winter. \nMay we all aspire to be more like Josh!

SUMMARY:SURF ENTRY CLINIC\, Sunday\, Feb 13th at 8am\, TOWER 9
DESCRIPTION:You can learn all the finer aspects of surf entry. This will help your triathlons\, swim runs\, and open water swims. We will cover duck diving; stingray avoidance; timing; etc. \nOpen to newbies and their questions. \n \nWater temp is likely 57 F\, +/- 2. Some sets will be larger/smaller than others. We will personally guide you through swimming past the breakers and returning. \nIf you’re new to the whole open water swimming thing or have an ocean triathlon coming soon\, make it here.

SUMMARY:HB Tower 9 Swim\, Tuesday\, Feb 8\, 8am.
DESCRIPTION:We will have a short\, 500 yard option\, along with our usual buoy (or multiple buoy) swim. Meet at 8:00\, in the water by 8:10. Usually out of the water by 8:50. \n \n  \nWaves will be 1-2 ft\, according to MagicSeaWeed. Wind will be 5-6 mph. Water & air temp will be cool\, so be prepared! At least waves are low\, wind is low\, and wind is in a good direction (offshore). Should be sunny\, which actually makes a huge difference! \nIf you’re unaccustomed to the cold\, bring a hot beverage in a thermos to Tower 9 (not your car). You’ll want to sip it about 2-4 minutes after exiting the water to offset the afterdrop.\nAll levels welcome. Most of us average 1:35-2:20/100m. If you’re a little slower\, don’t worry; we’re a nonjudgmental group. If you’re faster\, that’s awesome. \nOh\, and you can bring your fins\, especially if you’re a wee bit nervous about the waves and/or ocean swimming. Fins will give you the power to make it through any chop and likely increase your speed over your entire swim. \nP.S. Water temp has been 54-60 F recently. Air temp\, sun\, winds\, and humidity can also make you feel warmer/colder. You can check Surfline (check Huntington Street; it gives you a live camera on Tower 9\, but with ads interspersed every 30 seconds) and MagicSeaweed (check Huntington Pier as it’s the nearest location for MSW) for a recent forecast. Be warned\, though\, that Surfline can have a delay of a day and MSW tends to overestimate the water temp & windspeed by quite a bit.

SUMMARY:HB Tower 9 Swim\, Thursday\, January 20th\, 8am.
DESCRIPTION:Group will decide on length and course of swim. Meet at 8:00\, in the water by 8:10. Usually out of the water by 8:50. Typically\, we’ve been swimming 1\,000-2\,000 yards\, depending on number of swimmers and water conditions. \nBasically\, if the sky is sunnier & waves are low(ish)\, we’ll do a buoy swim or two. Each buoy swim is ~1\,000 yards. Most of us complete a buoy swim in 16-22 minutes. \nIf waves are higher and conditions more difficult\, we swim parallel to shore\, doing Tower swims. Basically\, swim either north or south\, parallel to the beach\, to a set # of lifeguard towers. First\, though\, we swim beyond the breakers and the surf lineup. That way\, we’re close enough to the shore (normally\, within 150 yards)\, so that we can bail easily\, if need be. \nWaves will be 1-2 ft\, according to MagicSeaWeed. Wind will be 4-5 mph. Water & air temp will be cool\, so be prepared! \nIf you’re unaccustomed to the cold\, bring a hot beverage in a thermos to Tower 9 (not your car). SUMMARY:HB Tower 9 Swim\, Thursday\, December 16th\, 8am.
DESCRIPTION:Group will decide on length and course of swim. Meet at 8:00\, in the water by 8:10. Usually out of the water by 8:50. Typically\, we’ve been swimming 1\,000-2\,000 yards\, depending on number of swimmers and water conditions. \nMost recently\, the water has been crystal clear\, low waves\, and 58 F. \nP.S. Water temp has been 56-62 F recently.

Be warned\, though\, that Surfline can have a delay of a day and MSW tends to overestimate the temp & winds by quite a bit. \nIf you’re unaccustomed to the cold\, bring a hot beverage in a thermos to Tower 9 (not your car). You’ll want to sip it about 2-4 minutes after exiting the water to offset the afterdrop. \nWe hope to see you there!

SUMMARY:HB Tower 9 Swim\, November 7th\, 8am
DESCRIPTION:WEEKEND TIME CHANGE: WE MEET AT 8\, SWIM BY 8:15! \nWe’re doing buoy swims if it’s mostly veterans\, tower swims if it’s mostly newbies. \nAll levels welcome. Most of us average 1:35-2:20/100m. If you’re a little slower\, don’t worry; we’re a nonjudgmental group. If you’re faster\, that’s awesome. \nOh\, and you can bring your fins\, especially if you’re a wee bit nervous about the waves. Fins will give you the power to make it through and likely increase your speed over your entire swim. \nP.S. Water temp has been ~ 60 F. Air temp\, sun\, winds\, and humidity can also make it feel warmer/colder. SUMMARY:HB Tower 9 Swim\, Sunday\, November 7th at 8 AM
DESCRIPTION:We’re doing buoy swims so long as conditions permit. Basically\, we start from Tower 9\, swim ~500 yards to the buoy out there\, and return. An entire round trip is about 1\,000 yards. If you want\, you can do it twice\, so you can choose how many yards you do. \nIf you’re unaccustomed to the cold\, bring a hot beverage in a thermos to Tower 9 (not your car). You’ll want to sip it about 2-4 minutes after exiting the water to offset the afterdrop.\nMost swimmers will take 12-24 minutes per buoy trip. The advantage is that it will replicate what you’ll encounter in a triathlon or open water swim. You’ll take off from the beach and have a buoy bobbing in the ocean to sight and then swim around.
